Rock Maze is the best hidden gem in Maryland and we haven’t stopped talking about it since we visited.
After we explored Swallow Falls State Park, we headed here to try to find a few geocaches. We had no clue how cool of a place it would end up being.

There are two tiny parking areas on Snaggy Mountain Road and I can imagine it gets hella crowded and impossible during peak season. We were lucky to grab the last one at the second set of spots, then headed up the paved road to the trail.

The walk to the maze is surrounded by a gigantic army of people-sized ferns.

Guess how many pics I took of this boulder vs root situation. So cool.

The boulders got bigger and bigger until finally they so densely packed that the “maze” started. We split up and started to explore every nook and cranny. You could walk on the ground under the ceiling of mountain laurel, or you could climb up to the top and walk around like the king of the world.
Between the boulders, it was sooo nice and cool in temp. If you’ve ever done the Scout’s Lookout/Angel’s Landing hike at Zion and go through “the Refridgerator” section – just like that.

Hi, babe. 😉
Of course he couldn’t stop himself from using this place like his own personal jungle gym.

The many moods of Caitlyn.

If I’ve learned anything about granite boulders in all of our travels it’s that these guys usually have been moved around by melting glacial ice over thousands of years.
You can especially tell this is the case because of all of the round divots in the sides, they look just like what we’ve seen in California and other parts of the western US.

The lichen, moss, and leaves everywhere created the most lush, green, sunlight-dappled setting. It was so nice to aimlessly play around here without any agenda other than exploring every hidden corner.

Hiiii.

There were plenty of other people here with us, but it’s so big here and the boulders give a ton of sound insulation so we never really bothered each other.

I mean, come on. Forest magic.

At one of the edges of the maze, we snuck into the woods to find a hidden geocache. Annnnd of course I took the opportunity to eat some of the snacks we’d gotten the day before at Candyland.

Nothing more satisfying than thinking the find is gonna allude you… then all of a sudden picking up a random patch of moss/leaves/rocks, and bam.

100000/10 highly recommend.
